Little bit, by little bit. I will not give up.
Lauren Ann Markham, Artist
American, b. 1989
I am fascinated and left in awe by the history of fine art and some of the artists that have come before me, specifically those of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Amongst the countless influential artists I could reference, some of my favorites include John Singer Sargent, Cecilia Beaux, Abbott Handerson Thayer, John William Waterhouse, and Anders Zorn. Their artwork is my North Star, it has allowed me to experience the realms in which artwork can resonate within one’s subconscious.
This resonate quality occurs when the artist has a true mastery of their technique. Their brushwork is so fluid it appears as magic across their canvas. The secret behind the magic comes from a methodical building of accurate drawing, accurate portrayal of light and shadow, nuanced shifts in color temperature, and a sophisticated composition. To have such command of these skills, they spent years at ateliers, studying under the masters that came before them.
In the current chapter of my artistic journey, I am building a foundation. As in the early years of those that came before me, I work primarily from life. I attend open studios with live models, focusing either on the full figure or portraiture, I work from still lifes in my home studio, and I step outside (easel in tow) and paint en plein air. Another important part of my studies is keeping up with workshops I can attend, local or otherwise, taught by the masters of our current era.
Through repetitive practice and a critical eye of my own work, I am honing and developing a magic of my own. My subject matter is limitless as my vision is to capture the resonate essence of the form, light, color and space within the composition that’s before me.
